Pandigital Inc., a Dublin firm known for making digital photo frames, jumps into the e-reader market today with a device positioned somewhere between the Kindle and the iPad. Pandigital's Novel has a 7-inch color touch-screen LCD display and connects to the Internet through Wi-Fi. The Novel, which runs on Google's Android platform, can also play video and other multimedia content. Barnes & Noble, which has been selling its own Nook e-reader, has agreed to provide access to its catalog of 1.2 million electronic books, plus newspapers and magazines. Both Novel models are priced at $199, but Pandigital founder and Chief Executive Officer expects the street retail price will be $20 or more cheaper.
A white-framed 1 GB model will be available today, while a black 2 GB version will hit store shelves in June. Amazon's $259 Kindle and the Sony Reader, which starts at $169, lead the market, which was joined by the Nook earlier this year and a number of dedicated e-reader devices that have either premiered or are in the works. Meanwhile, Apple's iPad, which starts at $499, and other tablet devices are also being marketed as electronic publishing readers. Although the Novel has more iPad-like functions than an e-reader, such as the ability to run Android apps, Finnegan stressed he was not marketing it as a full tablet or netbook computer. But the company believes it can tap a larger mass market than its e-reader competitors. 'We're selling tech products to a non-technical audience,' Finnegan said.
'It's a megatrend we're seeing and what happened to photos, music and video is happening with published content.' Harry Wang, director of health and mobile product research for, said Pandigital's entry into the market 'is perfectly timed.' 'Yes, it will face competition from the Kindle and iPad and a host of other devicemakers, but I expect its multimedia model to be a winner,' Wang said in an e-mail. Wang said the Novel will be $300 cheaper than an iPad, although it won't be as robust or user-friendly and the battery life, which is only half as long as the iPad, is 'a weakness.' 'But this company has invested resources to improve overall user experiences in areas such as home screen design, bookmarking and night read view,' Wang said. 'Although it does not have the name recognition or the cult status as Apple, it is a good value for consumers who are looking for new gift ideas or for personal use.'
Wang also said Pandigital's retail network should translate to 'early success (that) could lead to more retailer account wins during 2010 Christmas shopping season. In comparison, except Sony, Kindle, and iPad, no other e-reader brands can match Pandigital on the retail support side. Kurikulum Program Kesetaraan Manusia. ' Finnegan expects to ship 1.6 million units by the end of the year. Later this year, the company plans to introduce Novels that also access AT&T's cellular Edge network and a 6-inch model that uses a display format similar to the Kindle.
