I can understand the conflict - most of the material is duplicated from either the Starter Set or free online resources. There's some good material there, but. Even if you wanted everything in it, $74 retail is grossly overpriced IMO. Yes, there's a ton of beautiful artwork in the book. But I'm not buying the book for the artwork, and it comes across more as fluff and padding. Even disregarding that, standard price for a book that size is ~$50, or $60 for a somewhat thicker book, generally crammed full of rules and guidelines that make the books genuinely worthwhile. So, my advice - look for a%20 discount on it (dropping the price to ~$60, which is what I would value it at), or just leave it be.

Unlike previous editions, you don't need the rules or figure stats, you don't really need the new scenarios. There's not really anything here that you need to play the game. Really, the Starter Set is a much better value, and gives you everything you need to play to boot. I bought the book and I'm really happy with it. But you need to understand that you are not really buying a rulebook, but more of an 'idea' or hobby book.

Personally, I play Warhammer for the hobby aspects and so for me the book is amazing. The art, fluff and rules all complement someone who wants to create a campaign or develop their armies along certain themes.

No one does this better than GW and so I think its great that they are playing to their strengths. Honestly, if I'm looking for great game rules I wouldn't choose a miniatures game anyways. The GW fluff is better, the art and layout are much better and the overall world building is superior. You are paying for a premium product, and in my opinion that justifies the price. Regardless it is completely optional so if you just want to play the game then you don't even need to worry about it. I understand what you are saying, but there is no way I would compare GW book quality to a Privateer press book. Is Warmahordes a better game? In many respects yes. But there is no way I would compare one of their books to the age of Sigmar book.

We are fast falling into the realm of opinion here, which is always a murky beast at best. The art is more prevalent, certainly (it eats up darn near as much of the book as the actual rules do!), but I would not agree that it is necessarily better. We're presented with a combination of spreads of rough paintings and photographed miniatures - very fitting for the setting and system, but not something I would say is out and out better than what Paizo or Privateer Press puts into their books - if anything, their art tends to be better, as it is not nearly as intrusive to the content of the book as the artwork is in the other products that I have sampled.

As for the world building. The Iron Kingdoms books go into excruciating detail regarding the world and the peoples in it - whereas this book really comes down to Sigmar and a few of his god buddies, the Celestial Storm, and a few varieties of Chaos worshipper getting any attention - and even then, we only really get to see Khorne and Nurgle worshippers in action. It presents a good narrative - and one that I look forward to collecting the models to play through it with - but that is not objectively better than what you get from Privateer Press. Even comparing like to like, I get a lot stronger feel regarding the world of WarmaHordes reading through their rules expansions than I did through the whole of the Age of Sigmar book. Finally, the binding itself.

It is good quality binding, and good quality paper - but it's no better quality than the Pathfinder Core book (which lasted me over 6 years of heavy use before the binding wore through and needed replacing), or that in the Iron Kingdom books. And I see no reason why it should cost $15-$25 USD more than the three products I specifically listed (the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, the Iron Kingdoms core rulebook, and the Iron Kingdoms: Unleashed core rulebook). So, I say four times, you are wrong. The fluff is entirely dependent on your own preferences (Personally, I prefer the fluff for Iron Kingdoms because it brings you closer to the characters it portrays, which is something I've not gotten from any of Games Workshop's lines), the Art is too intrusive to the narrative of the book and I feel the layout detracts from creating a comprehensive narrative across the book (in terms of Fluff, Rules, or any other metric). And the world building - particularly in this book - is simply terrible, only showing a few unconnected realms and only a passing reference to everything else. And I do compare the Age of Sigmar book to every other hobby book that I have in my collection - there is nothing about it being a Games Workshop book that automatically elevates it above everything else, and I am rating it as I believe is fair. And what I believe is fair is that this book should have been priced at $50-$60 for the content it provides.

I cannot recommend it to anyone - be they art lover, fluff maniac, or rules devourer - for full retail price. I have seen (and own) many, many books that have given me much, much more in all three categories for a much lower price point (an excellent example - the Legend of the Five Rings RPG books. Wonderful fluff, gorgeous artwork, and a very comprehensive ruleset). Ok, fair enough. I play Warmachine but the books and world fall really flat for me.

Maybe what I see as quality is just my preference. In any case I'm really enjoying the big Sigmar book. Some of the maps and world ideas just make me smile,like the Jade Islands being taken over by Nurgle. Its a super simple idea that's really well presented.

There's plenty in the book that sparks my creative side and take me back to that feeling I used to get when I would buy 1st edition D and D modules just because they were cool to read. As I said before its completely optional if you have the boxset.

I don't think anyone should be buying this for rules. Its really just a big fleshed out version of what comes in the starter box. They are set up for general use, and give you a few suggestions for scenarios they could be used with. I would have liked an official 'Here are the forces that canonically took part in this scenario' added to the end of each scenario, but I am fine with the setup of the scenarios themselves and the fluff built up around them (which generally runs: Story leadup to the scenario, the scenario rules themselves, and the story aftermath of the scenario, with some alternative Battlefield rules popping up now and again). I would need to double check the book later, but I think you get 6 or 7 different scenarios to play with, each with quite a different feel to them.

You also get 3 variant board rulesets to play with, which each have a variety of effects to change the strategies of the game, and the Warscrolls for the new Stormcast Eternals (including the Stormcast Archers and a couple new Heroes), the new Khorne Bloodbound (though nothing new if you already have the starter set), and the core of the Sylvaneth (Branchwraith, Dryads, and Treeman Ancient), as well as a mix of old and new builds to play with.
