Operating out of a second-story location, Osaka Japanese Sushi & Steak House offers interesting, above-the-action views of downtown Northampton. A unique setting isn't, however, the primary reason for visiting Osaka, even though its minimalist Far Eastern decor and elevated perspectives are certainly appealing. Osaka, it seems, has a well-deserved reputation as one of the better places in the Pioneer Valley to enjoy sushi. The rice-raw fish combinations its chefs produce are both artistic and tasty; the choices available, comprehensive. The repertoire at Osaka is about more than fish and rice, however. Equipped with live-action teppanyaki grills, Osaka serves an assortment of hibachi dinners that ranges from Hibachi Chicken ($16.95) and Squid ($18.95) to high-end combinations such as Filet Mignon & Lobster Tail ($28.95).
Osaka also relies on the sort of menu template most Japanese eateries use, featuring tempura (Chicken -- $17.95, Shrimp -- $18.95, and Seafood $25.95); various teriyaki entrees; and agemono (deep-fried selections) that include a pork cutlet ($16.95 and fried oysters ($17.95) Donburi (rice bowls), Udon (noodle soup bowls) and Bento Box dinners round out the bill of fare. We started out our meal by sharing an appetizer plate of Sushi ($8.95), a five-piece assortment that included tuna, snapper, and salmon.
Simply but skillfully crafted, the sushi featured properly prepared rice (slightly sticky, lightly vinegary, not in the least gummy) and fresh, firm-textured fish. An order of Haru Maki (deep-fried Japanese vegetable spring roll -- $4.20) offered a crisp, clean-tasting wrapper and a mushroom-flecked vegetable filling unmarred by the stinky cabbage nuances that too often afflict spring rolls. The ginger-soy dip provided the option of layering on still more flavor. Osaka's creations sometimes reference elements of Western food tradition, and that was certainly the case with Beef Asparagus ($7.20), a hearty starter of asparagus stalks wrapped in thick strips of grilled steak.
Generously drizzled with a sweet teriyaki glaze and sprinkled with sesame seeds, the combination might have lacked the complex subtlety of traditional Japanese cuisine but was enjoyable nonetheless. A sixteen-piece Sashimi Deluxe ($23.95) represented an opportunity to savor a number of raw fish options; miso soup and a bowl of rice transformed the assortment into a meal. Beef Teriyaki ($18.95) was somewhat different from what we expected. Rather than thin, skewered strips of beef, Osaka's kitchen sent out thick-sliced lean steak, broiled and deliciously glazed with the house teriyaki. Presented on a bed of stir-fried broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and bamboo sprouts, the dish was obviously designed to appeal to those with a yen for red meat. Our last main course selection, Thai Red Curry with Shrimp ($18.95), came in an ultra-wide-rimmed bowl and featured julienned veggies tossed with a red curry sauce. Spicy, with subtle smoky notes, the dish had plenty of character.
Osaka, which is fully licensed, maintains a list of specialty sakes, as well as a credible assortment of vineyard-labeled wine. Beers, both domestic and Japanese imports, are available, while those who like inventive cocktail experiences can indulge in creations such as Lychee Martinis or Asian Pear Margaritas.
Dessert choices at Osaka were primarily of the ice cream sort, with a collection of Asian-inspired flavors ($2.50) like green tea or red bean paste as well Moochi ($2.95), cornstarch-dusted ice cream patties enrobed in sweet rice dough, among the frozen confections dished up. We sampled a Fried Banana ($3.95), which came to the table garnished with a maraschino cherry, an accent that adorns sweet and savory presentations alike at Osaka.
The dessert's combination of thin, crispy batter coating, fragrant, warmed-through fruit, and whipped cream topping was much to our liking. Similarly prepared and garnished, Tempura Ice Cream ($4.95) was equally enjoyable. At lunch Osaka features sushi and sashimi assortments, six different sushi lunch boxes, a number of hot entree specials, and a teppanyaki lunch experience.
Osaka also now has a sister operation at Coolidge Corner in Brookline.
