I have a client that's very interested in using Unity for a project, but she is concerned about the web player installation. She tried it on her office Windows XP computer and got a message saying that it required an administrator, and it kinda left her hanging without any further info. Her concern is that this will be a big obstacle for schools (which are the primary audience for the project). I assume that she'd need to get her office IT administrator to log into the computer and install the plug-in for her, but that would definitely be a showstopper for a lot of school computer labs. Is there any way to make the web player installation go more smoothly? She's comparing this to a previous Shockwave project, for which she's very rarely gotten complaints about the Shockwave installation. But Shockwave's installer would require the same admin privileges as Unity, wouldn't it?

And plenty of computers don't come with Shockwave pre-installed. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome! We have run into the same issue with schools and public libraries.

You basically need to get the IT staff involved (who may be a single person or an entire organization) and also sell them on the idea. Assuming they buy into the project, you then need to work with them (the IT staff) on how exactly the web player will be deployed. Sometimes they can do it easily, sometimes they may make you wait a long, long time.

(For example, we have one IT department that only does updates every six months.) So, make sure that you also present the idea or demos to the IT department.
